Year 10 Coombe Boys’ student spends a week with us
My first week of work experience was at Northrop Grumman (Sperry Marine). I was very nervous about being late, so left very early to be there. When I got there I met with my “buddy” – the person I would be with for my time there. He was very friendly, and showed me around the building, showing where I would be, the programming team, the canteen, HR and other things.
I was based in what seemed to be an office area, but had mechanical labs to the side, allowing the teams to work on their job: making radar for boats, and software for bridges.
I helped hook up hardware for one of their customer’s problems, but unfortunately the software wasn’t compatible with their software.
I had a great time there, and it made me see a possible future in engineering.
During my second week, I worked at a small company called Business Clan, which helps local businesses grow by providing the services they need, when they don’t have the time or resources themselves, such as web design, HR and strategy advice. I spent time in different places working with them, including their new office. I mostly helped with designing and building a new website. Doing so showed me the different aspects of creating a website: what layout to choose, how to make it easy to read and how to optimize it for search engines (SEO).
I certainly enjoyed working there, and learnt a lot about business and websites.
Overall, I had an amazing work experience, and would love to do it all over again, and could possibly do so in the summer with Northrop Grumman. I have learned lots about the place of work, and hope to be able to use this knowledge when I do go out into the world.
